Tonight Max and I watched Aliens Predator: Requiem (2007). I wanted to watch Zero Dark Thirty because Max had been asking about Osama bin Laden’s hunt and killing. He called him Pasama Beethoven.
First we started watching a terrible film called Alien Predator (2018) which I mistook for the 2007 film. But within 15-20 minutes we knew it wasn’t right. Max was asking why the film was so bad within 5-10 minutes. The camera was jerky, the actors were not good, and the set was just a small container box or warehouse. He couldn’t articulate his issues with the film in that way, but he knew before I did that it was a low-budget film stealing the title of a successful franchise..
So after watching Alien Predator (2018) in full, Max was very surprised how a film from 2007 could be so much better than a film from 2018, the current year. He kept saying 2017 instead of 2007, which was pretty funny, but I made him understand Requiem is 11 years old, 1 year older than him. He was fully aware of the age difference between the two films even if he couldn’t say 2007.
So I told him that now he understands sometimes newer is not always better. Sometimes it is better, but not always.
It’s these little lessons, day after day, that are Max growing up. And I cry for it.
